Releasing the Anterior Neck with Breathing, Bodywork, and Movement with Tiana Duncan, LMT
Learn how powerful combining diaphragmatic breathing and movement (rocking and tapping) can be when treating the anterior neck. During my 17 years of bodywork practice, I have found that going back to the basic elements of de-stressing (especially some of the tactics we used when we were children) can help unlock a client’s discomfort.
Belly breathing (diaphragmatic breathing) is an effective way to encourage the body to relax by decreasing muscle tension and stress hormones. And rocking and tapping movement can soothe everyday stress, foster focus, and sometimes even help with food cravings and PTSD.
Rocking is an excellent way of stimulating our vestibular and somatosensory systems. Since most of us have outgrown the crib and rarely play at the playground, opportunities to stimulate our vestibular systems can be harder to find as adults, although the need for stimulation doesn’t change.
Our contact with the anterior neck will be sensitive and specific. Muscle groups covered will include the suprahyoids, infrahyoids, SCM, longus capitis, and longus colli. The combination of precise work, diaphragmatic breathing, and movement will send your clients’ nervous systems on a blissful journey of relief.
